Local Sommelier-Owned Bottle Shop Offers World-Class Experience

Mountain Village Wine Merchant, a sommelier-owned wine and spirit shop, recently opened in Mountain Village with a range of services that go above and beyond retail.

Certified Sommelier Bryan Thames, along with his wife Felicity, opened the shop in July with the idea that selecting spirits (wine in particular) is more than just a beverage purchase, but an important part of our social events, meals, gatherings, vacations, gift-giving, and holidays.

Therefore, they created a Wine Club, hold monthly Wine Tastings, offer weekly recommendations and discounts via their newsletter, and offer consultations to customers who are stocking their wine cellars.

“We are happiest when we can help a customer with recommendations, whether for a dinner for two, or for holiday gatherings with a diverse guest list. We are here to be part of the community, to be a trusted resource,” says Bryan Thames. “We want folks in Mountain Village and Telluride to know they don’t have to travel far to get a world-class experience.”

“We’ve gotten great feedback from customers who are relieved that they don’t have to read labels and guess at wines”, says Felicity. “Knowing that Bryan has personally selected every bottle in the shop, or that they can come to regular wine tastings and experience for themselves, really makes a difference.”

The expertly-curated shop features wines from France, Italy, Australia, California and Spain, along with a complete selection of beers and spirits with tastings.

In addition to the in-person experience at the shop, Mountain Village Wine Merchant has also launched an ecommerce store with options for shipping, local delivery, or in-store pickup.

About the Owner
Bryan Thames moved to Telluride from Huntsville, AL, in the summer of 2005 to join the chef team at the New Sheridan Chophouse. Following there he went on to be the wine buyer at Telluride Bottleworks, followed by stints with Southern Glazers, JJ Buckley, and a variety of restaurants and wine bars in San Francisco. The COVID pandemic brought him back to Telluride, where he was the GM/Sommelier of Sidework Restaurant, until he was able to fulfill his dream and open Mountain Village Wine Merchant. Bryan holds the Certified Sommelier Certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers as well as the WSET Global Level 3. Bryan's wine interests have evolved over the years but you can always find a wealth of France and Italy in the store, along with interesting finds from California, Spain and Australia.
