A MUCH BETTER YEAR FOR WILDFIRES, SO FAR

A MUCH BETTER YEAR FOR WILDFIRES, SO FAR

The return of monsoon rains this summer have been a boon to firefighters, as there have been much fewer wildfires. However, fire officials warn that hot weather could rapidly dry the grasses and brush that grew up with the moisture and provide fuel for wildfires:

  • The Colorado Climate Center says July ranked as the 18th-wettest month for the state in 128 years
  • Through last week, 745 wildfires had been reported across the state
  • They burned 40,772 acres
  • Last year, a total of 6,649 fires were reported
  • They burned 56,056 acres
  • On average, 5,618 wildfires are reported in Colorado each year, burning 237,480 acres
  • That is based on data from 2011 to 2020 from the Rocky Mountain Area Coordinating Center
