Spring, summer and fall are dictated by the green of the Telluride Golf Course. From May to mid-October, golfers play from dawn to dusk on the 18-hole, 6,719-yard, par-71 course in Mountain Village. Surrounded by a peak-studded horizon from its 9,300-foot perch atop Turkey Creek Mesa, the Telluride Golf Club is often dubbed “the most beautiful place you’ll ever tee”– a catch-phrase adapted from its winter sibling.
Golf carts, equipped with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), assist with navigation of the terrain, while a full practice range, complete with chipping and putting greens, is available. The course also features: electronic tournament scoring; clinics and lessons; a halfway house grill restaurant; an on-green beverage and snack cart; and a full-service pro shop.
And as one of the country’s highest courses in elevation, the ball travels significantly farther at the Telluride Golf Course (average golfers can drive an estimated 15-25% farther than on a lowlander course). Why? Same reason it’s tougher to breathe; the thin mountain air hosts less oxygen and therefore imposes less resistance on the ball. Tee times and shotgun starts are available as is catering for special events.
The Telluride Golf Club was constructed in 1992 and serves as a private club for its members, as well as a public course for locals and guests. The course meanders from Mountain Village’s entrance to the back door of the Peaks Resort, where the pro shop is located.
